Title

HPC@Cloud

Abstract

This seminar will present HPC@Cloud, a multi-provider, open-source toolkit designed by Vanderlei during his Master's research in Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil to simplify the migration, deployment, and execution of HPC applications on public cloud platforms. With cloud computing now an accessible and cost-effective alternative to traditional on-premises clusters, this toolkit addresses key challenges such as infrastructure management, cost optimization, fault tolerance, and application portability.

The seminar will explore how HPC@Cloud utilizes inexpensive ephemeral resources like AWS spot instances to enable the execution of complex applications, especially MPI applications. It will cover fault-tolerance strategies that mitigate interruptions without significant performance penalties and demonstrate their effectiveness through experimental results across Amazon Web Services and Vultr Cloud. A key highlight will be a case study on migrating a real-world simulation of electron dynamics in molecules to the cloud, comparing its performance and cost-effectiveness against a traditional HPC cluster.
